Red Top Mountain State Park – Great family state park in Georgia

Looking for a more mild adventure locale for a weekend of family fun? Why not check out Red Top Mountain State Park? The park has activities and accommodations for every type of adventuring family. For the less adventurous there is a nice resort and pool. For the hard core you can find camp grounds and a lake. And for all you in-between, there are nice rustic cabins.

Best Things Nearby:

It’s almost impossible to come here and not see deer. Once, just while taking a nice 45-minute drive through the park, I saw 32 deer in the woods, eating on the side of the rode or sitting in a field.

There is a boat marina in the park where you can rent all types of boats for the day. We rented a ski boat for half the day, and it was $125 split between five people. They have skis and other things for rent if you don’t have your own. It’s a great way to spend the day.
There is also hiking, biking, fishing, and swimming available.

Best Things About the Resort:

What I most enjoy at this campground are the hiking trails. They have a few trails that are very short, but very scenic. They have a paved lake trail up by the resort and a nature trail by the general store. They also have longer trails that are a great way to spend the day. The trails and distances are:

  • Homestead Trail-5.5 miles
  • Sweet Gum Trail-3.5 miles
  • White Tail Trail-1 mile
  • Visitor Center Loop Trail-.75 miles
  • Lakeside Trail-.75 miles

These trails can also be looped together to make longer trails.

Resort Experience:

Red Top Mountain is a great family getaway or just a great place to go to get away from life for a few days. The campgrounds are typical of that of any state park in Georgia. The camp sites have electrical and water hookups, grills, fire pits, and picnic tables. Some sites are made just for tents while others have curved pull-thrus for large RVs. The bath houses offer hot showers and flushing toilets. All campgrounds have dump stations and several offer cable TV hookups.

Almost every site you get is beautiful. There are great views all around, and no site is more than a 5-minute walk to the lake. The lake sites are great, but usually fill up fast, especially on the weekends. If you want a lakeside site, it’s best to call and make reservation ahead of time. The rangers will be more than helpful in suggesting a good site over the phone.
